THE VESSEL
About BE THE FIRST
BE THE FIRST is a fully customised 2016 Alibi 54 catamaran, built at the Alibi shipyard in Thailand and completed in France, where all mechanical, electrical and interior installations were carried out. Developed in close collaboration with Loïc Goepfert, the shipyard’s founder and naval architect, this performance catamaran was engineered to be the lightest Alibi 54 ever built, without compromising the comfort of true off-grid bluewater cruising.
Her hull is built using epoxy resin infusion, with E-glass fibre over a Divinycell PVC foam core, and carbon is used extensively throughout: sub-structure, bulkheads, A-frame bowsprit, cross beam and superstructure, as well as floorboards and cabinetry. The rotating carbon mast and carbon boom, the 3 m asymmetrical daggerboards with electric control, the 3 m retractable carbon rudder blades and the retractable drive system all work to reduce drag. Heavy systems, engines included, are centralised to limit pitching, and the forward tender lift keeps weight out of the stern. This catamaran has reported speeds of up to 27 knots.
On deck, the two fully equipped pivoting helm stations bring winches, daggerboard controls and running rigging within easy reach; to starboard, a pivoting carbon pedestal allows steering from the cockpit in poor weather. The cockpit, with its teak sole, L-shaped settee and retractable table, opens onto the saloon through large carbon and glass sliding doors. Forward, expansive trampoline nets and a sun cushion between the arms of the bowsprit create a lounging area, while both transoms feature swim ladders and hot and cold freshwater showers, with the dive compressor to port.
Inside, the C-shaped saloon, finished in Burmese teak with a chalked oak cabin sole, is complemented to port by a galley equipped with a Bosch oven and induction cooktop, two 110-litre refrigerators, a deep freezer and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, while a starboard-side chart table offers 360° panoramic views. The owner’s suite occupies the starboard hull; the port hull houses a guest cabin and a bunk cabin. Mastervolt lithium batteries, 12 solar panels, a 200 l/h watermaker and a back-up generator allow autonomous living at anchor, with air conditioning and a washing machine on board.
